Shaka Memorial, Stanger, KwaZulu-Natal
Shaka, Zulu King, through myth, folklore and popular representation, is a giant figure in Zulu and wider South African culture. He militarised Zulu society, built a feared army, and conducted imperialist and expansionist campaigns. He was assassinated by his half-brothers in 1828. The memorial was dedicated in 1932, contributed to by the Zulu community. Alongside the memorial is placed a large boulder, moved there in the 1930s, said to have been the bathing-stone Shaka was sitting on when he was attacked.
