Sarah Baartman Memorial, Hankey, Eastern Cape

Sarah Baartman, a Khoi woman referred to as the so-called ‘Hottentot Venus’, was displayed as a freak in 19th century Britain and Paris. Her remains were repatriated to to South Africa in 2002 and buried ceremonially near her homeplace in the small town of Hankey. A memorial was also dedicated in 2002. A much delayed museum is also planned.
