Hintsa Grave and Memorial, near Willowvale, Eastern Cape

The grave of Hintsa, a Gcaleka and Xhosa Great King, is located off a minor road in the vicinity of Willowdale. Hintsa, a prisoner of British Imperial troops under Sir Harry Smith during the sixth frontier war, was possibly trying to escape near the spot and was most certainly killed there in 1835, probably deliberately shot by George Southey, one of the troopers. His corpse was mutilated for trophies. The grave was commemorated at an earlier date and then inĀ 1985, and later added to with memorial stones or isivivane.
