Hector Pietersen Memorial, Soweto

To name the 1976 Soweto massacre is to conjure up the now iconic photograph of the dying Hector Pietersen being carried by his cousin accompanied by his sister. There are variant spellings of his name, with the one used here that preferred by his family. Rather than a participant, he was a bystander and shot as ‘collateral damage’ to the massacre unfolding, as so many were. The memorial to him is accompanied by a Museum and interpretation centre and is part of the Soweto Freedom Trail.
